FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is MarketHack?

MarketHack is a 15-week course in digital marketing. But it’s much more than that: It’s an experience. Our results-oriented experiential learning approach provides a deep dive into contemporary digital marketing best practices. Our approach features practical lessons, frequent guests, hands-on exercises, group activities, peer learning, networking opportunities, project-based learning and more.

What 21st century skills will I learn in this course?

At a time when everyone can be a creator of content, and the cost of distribution races toward zero, mastering the skills of digital marketing has never been more critical. This course will teach you how to set your marketing objectives and then use an array of digital channels and techniques to get your product in front of your target audiences, to increase your profitability and grow your business. It offers a balance of traditional marketing skills with the emerging field of performance marketing, which leverages experimentation, statistics and analysis to optimize lead generation and conversion.

Do I learn marketing strategy, too?

We teach the timeless principles of marketing strategy that survive despite a shifting technological landscape, skills like data-driven decision making, identifying business goals and marketing objectives, establishing brand voice, crafting a multi-platform communications strategy, determining your Key Performance Indicators, defining your value proposition, and segmenting your customers. It combines marketing fundamentals, hands on training and industry perspectives from some of the top digital marketers in South Florida. Participants will learn the top tactics, both organic and paid, to attract eyeballs to your effort.

Will I learn web development in this class?

No. Participants will learn how to make their website relevant to their target audience, drive traffic to the site through various channels, and optimize conversions on the site. But they will not learn how to build websites. That’s a different class.

Who are the instructors, mentors and guest speakers?

They are all top industry pros with decades of experience in the digital marketing field and in teaching adult learners.

Who is the course designed for?

Most MarketHack participants are entrepreneurs and small business owners. Others work for an early-stage company or a corporate giant or a creative agency. Others still work in unrelated fields but want to learn digital marketing to expand their horizons and accelerate their career. No matter your background or experience, this course will give you the fundamentals to launch and optimize digital campaigns.

Is this course a fit for me?

The types of participants who will most benefit from this program are:

  • Individuals with a background in traditional marketing looking to build their digital skillset
  • Individuals with technical training in front-end development, web design or user experience design looking to build their marketing knowledge
  • Individuals looking to embark on a career in digital marketing
  • Individuals looking to start or grow their own company
  • Anyone with something to say or something to sell that wants to reach a digital audience
  • Individuals with some basic knowledge of digital marketing looking to take it to the next level

I'm a Miami Dade College student. Is this course for me?

Not really. This is an adult-education, non-credit class, and we do not offer a reduced rate for MDC students. The good news: MarketHack inspired a for-credit marketing class, MAR 1720, that is offered on a regular basis, costs much less and will count toward your degree. If you’re an MDC student and still prefer to take MarketHack, please contact Program Coordinator Vivienne Vicera via e-mail at vvicera@mdc.edu or phone, (305) 237-7809.

What is the course structure?

The course lasts 15 weeks, meeting on Tuesday evenings in downtown Miami at a convenient time for busy professionals (class starts at 6:30 p.m. and run until 9 p.m.). There will be a total of 40 in-person instructional hours, plus on average five hours of homework a week. Each participant will be required to complete an individual project that they will work on throughout the semester.

What's this about an individual project?

The Individual Project is the core of the MarketHack experiential learning experience. We spend the first few weeks of class defining the participants’ challenge as it related to their Individual Project. The project forms the foundation for the work the participant does the rest of this semester. And participants are given an option to work on the digital marketing efforts for partner organizations that have volunteered to lend their website for use in class.

Who are these partner organizations?

MarketHack has partnered with more than a dozen local businesses, nonprofits, education outfits and marketing agencies to enhance the in-class experience with real-life projects with real results and actual stakes.

How long will the coursework take me each week?

Besides attending the weekly 2.5-hour class, participants are expected to commit an average of 5 additional hours per week for homework.

What will I be able to do upon completion of the course?

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Divide their target audience into segments and personas;
  • Identify their Value Proposition and differentiators;
  • Establish their multi-channel marketing and communication strategy;
  • Utilize data and analytics to track and optimize their campaigns;
  • Establish Key Performance Indicators for their campaign;
  • Create, target, launch, track and optimize paid digital advertising campaigns in both search and social media;
  • Use A/B tests and other experimentation technique to optimize the effectiveness of digital marketing efforts.

What do I get at the end of the class?

Participants who successfully complete all assignments and the individual project will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Idea Center at Miami Dade College. It’s a credential that is recognized by employers across South Florida. Miami Dade College is the nation’s largest college, and the Idea Center is its hub for innovation and entrepreneurship.

Will I be able to get a job after I finish this course?

The skills you learn in MarketHack are in high demand across South Florida and the nation. MarketHack has strong relationships with most of the major digital marketing agencies in town, and can facilitate introductions. Its inaugural hiring partner is República, a leading cross-cultural agency based in Miami. The firm’s top executives assisted us from the very beginning in developing and refining the curriculum to maximize its emphasis on the most marketable skills. Throughout the semester, the agency offers subject-area experts as guests and mentors. We will visit their offices to get a view into how a modern marketing agency is organized. After class if over, República has accepts applications from and offers apprenticeships to top performing MarketHack participants.

Are there any prerequisites to take this course?

This program is open to participants and professionals from any field and level of experience and are relatively new to the dynamic and ever-evolving world of digital marketing. The more varied the background and experiences of the participants, the livelier and more interesting the class will be.

What else does this course offer?

In addition to cutting-edge course content, the MarketHack experience also features top professionals as guests mentors and advisors; unrivaled local networking opportunities with instructors, guests, and other participants; a visit to a top digital marketing agency; and VIP access to special events and speakers at the Idea Center at Miami Dade College.
